What do search engines like Google , Yahoo and Bing really do? A search engine is a tool that searches for and identifies items through keywords or search terms given by the user to look for certain websites. Search engines use algorithms to determine what information you’re really looking for based on the terms you use.

For example, if you search for the term, “Umbrella”, a search engine can bring you everything from Rhianna’s music video to DIY videos on how to make your own umbrella. But when you search for “Umbrellas for Sale New York”, the search engine would now know that you want to buy an umbrella and you’re in New York. So instead to showing you links to Rhianna’s video, it will show you websites where you can buy umbrellas in New York City.

The purpose of search engine optimization (SEO) is to know what the people who would be interested in your products and services are looking for online. SEO then uses that information to make your website more visible every time a potential customer uses these keywords on search engine.

Why is this important for businesses? By being highly visible on search engines for the right set of keywords, your business can:

  • reach more people interested in buying your products and services
  • you can advertise to a bigger number at lower cost
  • you can get more people to buy and keep buying from your website because you’re the one they see and remember when they’re looking for what they need.

 Crawling and Indexing

Search engines have two major functions, that is, crawling or building an index, and providing users a rank list of websites that are relevant.

Google Spiders Crawling For Links & Indexing it

“Crawling” is the term used for search engines to locate information from site to site. It has its own automated robots or “spiders” for it to go about the billions of interconnected documents online. And as soon as these pages are found, these spiders decipher the codes and store them in databases, for purposes of recalling them later for search query.

On the user’s side, it’s so easy being able to browse through all those websites with just one click.  Little do we know that search engine companies have a monstrous task of safekeeping large quantities of information while making it accessible to users when needed.    The process is so intricate that search engine companies see the need to store these pages in a datacenter for easy access.

Indexing, on the other hand, is performed when a spider checks a standard filename while addressing it before sending (information) it back to be indexed such as page content, title or headings. To put it simply, indexing is the process where the search engine associates a website, a specific web page, or the content of that web page, to search term. To figure out what keywords or search term to associated all that information with, they look at the website’s code, known as HTML, for information.

Indexing is what allows you to find the Ikea website even when you don’t type “Ikea” on the search box and use other words related to Ikea like “swedish DIY furniture”.

Providing Answers

Search engines are answering machines on the web. When someone performs a search online, the search engine inspects, probes, scours billions of documents on the web, then highlights the most relevant and ranks those according to popularity.

Search engine optimization

It takes more than finding the right words to remain relevant online, engineers worked on their algorithms as a “ranking factor” for that all-important popularity on the web. They have developed algorithms for users to have their answers on time and on target.  Simply put, the more relevant your website is to a certain keyword, the more likely you are to show up at the top or near the top of search engine results.

How does this work? Let’s say you’re an accountant who happens to have the same name as Justin Bieber and you’re looking for work. When an HR manager looks for your name on Google, he’ll probably have a hard time looking for your profile online because every result would show up the latest news on Justin Bieber the celebrity. Why would he show up more on Google even though you both have the same name? Because the Biebs, right now, is more relevant than you are. More people are looking for him that they’re looking for you.

So how can you make it easier for people looking for Justin Bieber, the accountant, to find you? With SEO of course!

By associating your profile, social media accounts, and websites with the terms “justin bieber accountant” and “accountant justin bieber”, any employer looking for you would have an easier time finding you instead of the other Beiber.
